My father-in-law Martin Adlešič with his experience and advice
has been by my side throughout my beekeeping adventure. I was
more like his assistant in the first few years than he my mentor.
Later he corrected the stupidity I had done around beekeeping.
My Father-In-Law – The Slovenian Beekeeper
Martin
Adlešič had already started beekeeping in 1955 with 9 AŽ families. His beekeeping
history is closely tied with the revolutionary period of Slovenian beekeeping.
At that time they began to circulate beehives under the sponsorship of the
“state-owned beekeeping society AGROMEL”. He got a job at AGROMEL in 1959 and
as a result his humble beginnings turned him into a “great beekeeper”. After
a year he was trusted to take over the management of an independent beekeeping
operation in Bela krajina with approximately 400 hives. During those years
he travelled with the bees all across Yugoslavia. This picture was taken in
1963 in Lika where 140 kg of honey poured out of each hive.

The simplicity of the work in circulating the hives excited him so much that
in 1961 he changed the AŽ hives with the the stacked-high type hives, with
which he bee keeps today. His still has a clever attitude towards bees as he
is always looking for new bee-hive solutions, which would be the best for bees
and later new solutions which would make beekeeping easier. Years of experience,
gained through this vast operation of beekeeping have also allowed for his
sole proprietorship and adaptation to a profitable operation.
My father-in-law has tried to get rid of all the negative sides of stacking
bee-hives with innovations and to a great extent has succeded. When he was
observing other beekepers in how they stacked the AŽ bee-hives into transportable
beehouses, he immediately started to think about how he could do this with
LR bee-hives. He succeeded in doing so as beekeepers now use 88 LR bee-hives
in two transportable units. He has not forgotten about the beekeepers regarding
his innovations. He made the bee-hives lighter by replacing the wood with styrofoam
covered in aluminum foil.
